Plastics Thermoforming Tool Design: Plug Vs Cavity Molds

چکیده

One of the most fundamental decisions when designing a mold for the plastics thermoforming process is whether to use a plug (male) mold or a cavity (female) mold design. This critical decision is often brushed over in the literature yet has the greatest single impact on part wall thickness and wall thickness variation. Other considerations when deciding on this fundamental design concept include location of thinnest cross section, material shrink rates, a defect known as "webbing", and draw ratio determination. Given access to even the most basic thermoforming equipment, students can design a wide variety of molds to test and evaluate the difference between plug and cavity mold designs for similar part geometry. This paper will discuss such an activity. Specific Learning Objectives include: 1) The student will understand the relationship between mold design, material deformation and part wall thickness. 2) The student will understand the effect of materials shrink rates and part release from the mold. 3) The student will be able to explain why parts produced with plug molds have less wall thickness variation than those produced with a cavity mold. 4) The student will be able to calculate linear draw ratios on thermoformed parts and explain the relationship of these ratios to wall thickness variation.

Material and Parameter Analysis of the PolyJet Process for Mold Making Using Design of Experiments

Since additive manufacturing technologies constantly advance, the use of this technology in mold making seems reasonable. Many manufacturers of additive manufacturing machines, however, do not offer any suggestions on how to parameterize the machine to achieve optimal results for mold making. The purpose of this research is to determine the interdependencies of different materials and parameter...

Rheological Modeling for Production of High Quality Polymeric

The fundamental defect inherent to the thermoforming technology is wall-thickness variation of the products due to inadequate thermal processing during production of polymer. A nonlinear viscoelastic rheological model is implemented for developing the process model. This model describes deformation process of a sheet in thermoforming process. Because of relaxation pause after plug-assist stage ...

Automated ejectability analysis and parting surface generation for mold tool design

This report describes a CAD approach for automated ejectability analysis and parting surface generation for mold tool design. This design automation is incorporated into a Rapid Tool Manufacturing system which integrates stereolithography (SLA) and thermal spraying into a CAD/CAM environment for manufacturing tooling like injection molds. Design models are first evaluated for part ejectability ...

Longleaf Pine Root System Development and Seedling Quality in Response to Copper Root Pruning and Cavity Size

rootcollar diameter as the standard, nondestructive measure of seedling quality. Other nondestructive measures of seedling quality would be valuable. One option, root-bound index (RBI), reflects the ratio of rootcollar and cavity diameters (South et al. 2005, South and Mitchell 2006). This variable is an indirect, nondestructive measure of how well the cavity accommodates both the taproot and f...
